Though interesting and entertaining stories can be told, various forms of stories can stimulate and inspire readers, especially when conveying human values through the means of ‘character’ (Alvinindyta 2018:8, 10). Literature is very important when referring to problems experienced by individuals, talking about life and life around individuals. This thesis will end with a conclusion that there is a line between when the parents become authority figures and when the parents become the companion of their children. My analysis will show how Dory's and Dory's mother's parenting style is influenced by the culture and childhood trauma, and how their parenting styles affect the relationship between them and their daughter as well as their daughters' behavioral problems. To analyze these three points, I will apply the authoritarian parenting style and permissive parenting style based on the types of parenting theory by Diana Baumrind.

This novel intrigues me to analyze the characteristics of Dory's and Dory's mother's parenting style, the influence of their parenting styles, and how it affects the mother's and daughter's relationship and their daughter's behavior problems.

One of those novels is Astonishing Color of After, a novel about the mother and daughter’s relationship between two generations, Dory with her mother, and Dory with her daughter, Leigh. Young Adult fiction's popularity is at its peak right now due to the topic being related to the problems that teenagers are facing in today's era.

there is no exact definition to the term young adult fiction Belbin ( 2011) Moreover, this literature is likely intended to solve issues young people face in real life such as identity alteration and reaching maturity Mccallum,2012 points out how Young Adult authors amplify the use of unique characters, in search of identity and meaning, that is usually in struggle with the society and the norms, he also discusses the literary techniques commonly used in such novels, using internal dialogue, and focusing on the psychological aspect, all these factors are used to reflect teenager's quest for identity and shows the conflict between the society and individuals (p67). Young Adult fiction is a term used to describe the literature associated with young people during teenage hood, Ellis (1980) explains the connotation of Young Adult fiction in association with their everyday life, it actually gives an accurate exhibition of teenagers and their emotional, social and psychological struggles trying to prove themselves in a world ruled by adults (p5).
